First of all, let me say how eager I am to get to our boat and post on our actual adventure. While rationally I know that it will be here before we know it (33 more days for anyone that’s counting), I can’t help but feel as though this waiting game is a tease.
Recently, we have been spending our time making trips to Good Will, trying to sell our furniture and other belongings on Craigslist and slowly checking off the other items on our to do lists. Today my arms are sore from travel vaccinations. Riveting, I know.
This weekend, Will found a consignment marine store in Alameda. Look at boat stuff or continue packing? The choice was obvious and away we went.
We went to this store with one goal: find our boat an emergency panic button. Turns out, there are GPS-powered devices that if things go really, REALLY wrong, you can activate. Activating these devices bring in the calvary to save you. Cue Coast Guard, national media, and public embarrassment. But really, if you have a big problem, these devices are quite literally life savers. Will has been investigating what kind we need for our trip and not surprisingly, they are not cheap. I’ll save the details for one of Will’s posts (because to be honest I can barely remember what the acronym means), but we were able to find 2 PLBs – Personal Locator Beacons – for less than $250 total. Successful mission indeed!
Finally – I’ll close with a preview of what’s to come to make sure that expectations are adequately set. One of my goals in this trip, besides everything we have talked about previously, is learning how to make videos. Cue SV Delos and La Vagabonde reference. What those guys are able to produce is incredible. Us on the other hand…
