After 9 months sailing the West Indies, we FINALLY make it to the Bahamas. We’d been dreaming about this portion of the trip since before we left. Pristine water. Deserted beaches. Spear fishing. What more could you want?
Well… it turns out that after seeing some of the most beautiful and dramatic islands in the world, the first impression of the Bahamas falls a bit flat. Yes, the water is beautiful. And yes, in theory there are many fish to spear. But something was just not right. Each island looked the same. All were very flat and quite desolate. After the luxury of experiencing a French island one day and then a former British colony the next and hiking through gorges and volcanoes, going from one flat place with no civilization to another that looked exactly the same for a week got a little tiring.
And then the fishing. Will was determined to spear something BIG. But literally every time we got close, his chosen fishing spot was also frequented by many, many sharks. Maybe we were wusses – but I didn’t want to be trying to fight a grouper out of a hole while a shark was trying to fight it off our spear. AND, it wasn’t lobster season. So despite spotting big lobsters on every dive, we couldn’t take them.
So what did we do? Well, we did what any other bored cruisers would do in the land of sharks. We tried every night to bait them and see what kind of a show we could inspire. That was fun.
