The weather for the past week has been surprisingly terrible. It has wreaked havoc on the boat and crew morale, not to mention our productivity and desire to write or make videos (hence the lack of recent updates).
Stuck in Dominica waiting for a better passage window, we spent three waterlogged days and nights. By Saturday, the wind stayed strong, but became more easterly with smaller, more favorable swell, so we headed to Guadeloupe. The passage was rough, and long, but we made it there safely, docked the boat, and met friends who were down for bachelor party shenanigans. It rained more. Everything on the boat was soggy and stayed that way. I lost a flip flop a week ago and have been wearing sneakers ever since. Without being able to properly dry for a week, you can imagine what they smell like. And our towels? They should probably be burned.
The constant moisture has also caused some of our electronics to act up. Our otherwise reliable GPS and depth sounder are no longer reliable, choosing instead to cut in and out and inopportune moments. My computer, the only one we can use for video and photo editing, suddenly will not turn on – so it may be a while before the next video is ready. It’s been one of those weeks where everything about living on a boat feels difficult and we long for a simpler home that doesn’t rock or leak.
Because we were depressed inside a vessel threatening to explode with mildew, we didn’t write much about our travels back through the Grenadines with our buddy Jack. They were sunny and delightful. Here are some pictures. I have none from rainy doldrum days.
Now we are anchored in Antigua. The sun and 15 knot trade winds are back. It is amazing what a nice day will do to instantly change a mood. We’ll be in Antigua for the next few days and then it’s back to St. Martin and the Virgin islands by the end of the month.
