Well, we’ve made it 7 days with the boat. But who’s counting?
On Sunday, it was our 1 year wedding anniversary. When we were envisioning this trip, we thought that by the 18th we would be able to set sail and bop around the BVIs recreating the itinerary from the Yacht Week where we met.
The idea that we could have set sail after just seeing the boat 4 days prior is laughable now. But oh well. This is clearly a learning process.
Instead, we locked up the boat, packed an overnight bag, and LEFT! For the first time since getting to Tortola, we got out of Nanny Cay. We hopped a ferry and I used the last of my hotel points from my consulting days to book us a night at the Westin in St. John.
Heaven. That’s the only way to describe it. Endless supply of cold spa water. A complimentary bottle of champagne because we it was a special day for us. Air conditioning. I could go on and on. I don’t think I have ever appreciated a hotel more. And knowing that it would likely be the last time we experience such glorious luxury, we savored every second. And yes, I pocketed a whole bunch of shampoos and conditioners to take with me when I want to remember what a real shower feels like.
As we were sitting at dinner, laughing and relaxed, we realized that this was the first time in about a month that we’ve taken a whole day and just relaxed with each other. Between packing up the apartment, driving cross-country, getting to the boat, and spending every spare minute of time or mental energy fretting about what we need to fix, it’s been a while since we could just, be. And boy was it nice.
It feels silly to write about needing to take a vacation away from our vacation. But so it goes. Being in a Caribbean paradise was a nice reminder of what we are working towards. It’s easy to forget what a breathtakingly beautiful part of the world we are in when all we see is a boat yard or a marina. But now that we’ve got our eye on the prize, it should just be another week or two before we too are anchored out in crystal waters.
And you know what? As nice as the Westin was, it was great to get back to our boat. Already, she’s starting to feel like home. A few more battles with the spiders that refuse to leave and a solution to the smell in the head that also refuses to leave, and we should be all set. That and getting the propane situation sorted so that we have a way of cooking food, fixing the fuel pump, figuring out what is going wrong with our DC power… you know, the usual.
